Do you look in the mirror and sometimes think, “I’m not overweight, so why does my face look so chubby?” Buccal fat removal can help thin out overly full cheeks. Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Mary Ann Contogiannis at The Renaissance Center for Plastic Surgery & Wellness, performs buccal fat removal for men and women in Greensboro, NC, Burlington, Winston-Salem, High Point, and the surrounding neighborhoods.
What is Involved in Buccal Fat Removal?
Buccal fat removal is a surgical cosmetic procedure used to thin the cheeks by removing the fat pad from the hollow of the cheek. There is a buccal fat pad located in each cheek, and the size can vary, not just from one person to the next, but from one cheek to the other on the same person.
A certain amount of fat in the face helps to soften the features and fill out the face, often giving the face a more youthful appearance. But if your cheeks are so full that you feel like you have “chipmunk cheeks,” buccal fat pad removal may be a great solution for you.
How Much Does Buccal Fat Removal Cost in Greensboro, NC?
Buccal fat removal cost will vary from one patient to the next, as a variety of factors must be considered that may affect the final cost. Costs for your specific case will be discussed during your initial consultation and you’ll be given an accurate amount at that time.
Most cosmetic surgeries are not covered by insurance unless it’s for functional or medical reasons, so it’s likely you’ll be responsible for full payment for your buccal fat removal. You can check with your insurance provider to be sure.
In an effort to keep procedures as affordable as possible for our clients, we’re happy to be able to offer financing as an option for your buccal fat removal procedure through Alphaeon® or CareCredit®.
How Does Buccal Fat Removal Work?
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation, typically at the doctor’s discretion to decide which is best for your situation. An incision is made inside the mouth, on the inner side of your cheek area, to access the fat pad for removal.
Once the fat pad is removed, the doctor closes the incisions, usually with self-dissolving sutures. While you’ll likely be tempted, it’s important to keep from using your tongue to fidget with the sutures.
What Are the Benefits of Buccal Fat Removal?
To those patients who have lived with “chubby cheeks” for too long, the benefits are extremely rewarding. Some common ones include:
- Boosted self-image and confidence
- Short procedure time with no visible scars
- Little (if any) downtime required for recovery
- More facial definition, balance and proportion
- Subtle, natural-looking results
Am I a Good Candidate for Buccal Fat Removal?
In most cases, if you’re a healthy adult, and you understand and agree with the doctor about your expectations, it’s likely you’ll be a great candidate for buccal fat removal and will be greatly pleased with your results.
Buccal fat removal is usually not done for patients whose face is already thin or narrow. Removing the fat pad may lead to an aged, gaunt appearance as they get older.
What Can I Expect During Recovery Following Buccal Fat Removal?
Your results will not be fully seen immediately following the surgery, as it takes a couple of weeks for the swelling to subside. Inside the mouth (where the incisions are) can take seven to 10 days to heal.
After the procedure, Dr. Contogiannis will give you post-op instructions to follow that are specific to your case. Follow these directions as closely as possible; it will give you the best chance for a speedy recovery with optimal results.
