Gynecomastia

What is Involved in Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia occurs when hormone levels are out of balance, specifically when estrogen levels exceed those of testosterone. When this happens in men, the breasts can become swollen or enlarged and tender. In some cases, there can even be a discharge from one or both nipples.

This condition can occur at birth or during puberty, but is extremely prevalent in men between 50-70 years of age. Roughly one in four men in that age group will be affected.

Gynecomastia surgery, more commonly known as male breast reduction, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the enlargement of male breast tissue.

How Much Does Gynecomastia Surgery Cost?

The cost for male reduction surgery will vary, depending on the scope and extent of the surgery, along with other variables which may affect the final cost.

Most cosmetic surgeries are not covered by insurance unless it’s for functional or medical reasons, so you may be responsible for the full cost. You can check with your insurance provider to find out if male breast reduction is eligible for coverage.

We strive to keep our patient procedures as affordable as possible for our clients, so we’re pleased to be able to offer financing as an option for your gynecomastia surgery through Alphaeon® or CareCredit®.

How Does Gynecomastia Surgery Work?

Gynecomastia is treated by removing the excess glandular tissue or, in some cases, fatty tissue beneath the breast. If glandular tissue is causing the problem, the surgeon will remove it through a small incision made on the lower part of the nipple.

For removal of fatty tissue, liposuction is frequently used by inserting a small cannula into the nipple incision and suctioning the fatty tissue out.

What Are the Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery?

For the men who choose to have gynecomastia surgery, most are absolutely thrilled with their results, which go far beyond just the physical changes to include mental and emotional benefits as well. Commonly experienced benefits can include:

Am I a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

If you’re a healthy adult male who’s concerned about enlarged breasts, chances are you’ll be a good candidate for male breast reduction. Ideal candidates may have tried other methods to reduce or eliminate the swelling but without success.

During the initial consultation, Dr. Contogiannis will help make sure your expectations are in alignment with what’s possible and if male breast reduction is your best option to help you achieve your goals. If not, she can help you explore other options that may serve you better.

Best results are obtained by men who don’t smoke, use drugs, or have any sort of medical condition that could interfere with the body’s natural healing process.

What Can I Expect During Recovery Following Gynecomastia Surgery?

Male breast reduction is done using general anesthesia and performed in our AAAHC-accredited outpatient facility. The recovery period following gynecomastia surgery is generally rather mild. Pain is typically minimal and can usually be managed with over-the-counter medications.

Most patients (depending on their job) are able to return to work within just a few days. Any loss of sensation in the breast area should return gradually on its own in the course of a few months.

After the procedure, Dr. Contogiannis will give you post-op instructions to follow that are specific to your case. Follow these directions as closely as possible; they’ll provide the best option for a rapid recovery and optimal results.
