What is involved in Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in the United States. Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure that can be used to give breasts a fuller, firmer and more proportional look that will enlarge, reshape or balance the breasts and replace volume lost from the breasts. Our patients undergo this surgery to increase breast size due to naturally small breasts, volume loss after pregnancy or weight loss, to correct asymmetries or to correct congenital breast defects. Women often feel more confident or feel better with their self-image after this surgery.

Breast Augmentation can be accomplished in several different ways, depending on the extent of the enlargement desired. Most typically, saline or silicone breast implants are used. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and requires the use of general anesthesia. The implants can be placed either in front of or behind the chest wall muscles.

What are Breast Implants?

Breast implants are silicone shells that are either filled with saline or silicone gel. Both types of implants are safe. They can be round or teardrop in shape. Some are pre-filled to a particular size and others can be filled during the Breast Augmentation procedure.

During your individual consultation, Dr. Contogiannis will help you decide which type is best for you and discuss the advantages of both implant types. Dr. Contogiannis understands that each woman’s breasts, body shape and desires are unique to her. She takes the time during your individual consultation to understand what you would like to accomplish with the Breast Augmentation surgery and develops a customized treatment plan for the surgery. Dr. Contogiannis will thoroughly discuss the choice of implant and appropriate implant placement during the consultation.

What is the Cost of Breast Augmentation in Greensboro, NC?

Breast augmentation cost will vary from one patient to the next depending on the choice of implants, the surgical complexity of the operation, and other variables which must be taken into account when determining final cost.

Costs for your specific case will be discussed during your initial consultation and you’ll be given an accurate amount at that time. Many cosmetic surgeries are not covered by insurance, so it’s best to contact your provider to find out about their policy on breast augmentation.

At The Renaissance Center for Plastic Surgery & Wellness, we try to keep our procedures accessible and affordable for all of our clients. To that end, we’re pleased to offer financing as an option, through Alphaeon® or CareCredit®.

How does Breast Augmentation Work?

Dr. Contogiannis understands that every Breast Augmentation procedure is unique to a woman’s breast and body shape so she will outline a customized plan for you to achieve your aesthetic goals. Our whole office works to make the surgery a great experience for you. During your private initial consultation, Dr. Contogiannis will discuss implant and incision options with you and outline the surgical plan. You will then have a pre-operative appointment where Dr. Contogiannis will once again discuss the surgical plan with you and you will be able to try on breast sizes to give you an idea of what the augmentation will look like after surgery.

The surgery will be performed in our Greensboro AAAHC accredited office-based surgical center as an outpatient under general anesthesia. Incision options include: inframmary (in the crease under breast as it meets the chest wall), periareolar (around the areola) or transaxillary (in the armpit). These incisions are all placed in inconspicuous areas that blend with the breast/chest contours. After the surgery you will be able to go home and recover in the comfort of your own home.

What are the Benefits of Breast Augmentation?

There are many benefits to having breast augmentation and some go far beyond the visible difference in your physical appearance. Most women who have breast augmentation are thrilled with their results. Some of the most common benefits include:

  • Dramatic improvements in self-confidence and self-image
  • A fuller silhouette, more shapely and balanced
  • Clothes fit better
  • Breasts have a younger, perkier appearance
  • Natural-looking results

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

If you’re an adult woman in reasonably good health, and you’re not satisfied with the shape, size or symmetry of your breasts, you’re probably a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery. It is not recommended if your breasts are not fully developed or if you’re breastfeeding or pregnant.

What Can I Expect During Recovery from Breast Augmentation?

Dr. Contogiannis uses Exparel (a medication that provides pain relief for almost 3 days post-operatively) at the time of surgery to help control your post-operative pain and soreness. You may still have some soreness or pain for 3-5 days after surgery, but it will be lessened and Dr. Contogiannis will prescribe medication to help combat any pain. She would like for you to resume normal activities as soon as you can as this helps speed the recovery process (just don’t lift anything heavier than 5 lbs. for 4 weeks after surgery).

Most patient feel a little tired and sore after the Breast Augmentation surgery, but this will resolve. Your nipples may be sensitive and a little sore for a few days. Some bruising and tenderness in the breast is normal and resolves within a few short weeks. Many patients return to work within a week. You will be asked to wear a light support bra for 4 weeks post-op to support the breasts and decrease swelling. You will begin implant massage within a week after surgery. Your incisions will begin to fade after a month and continue for up to a year or two.
