Brachioplasty

What is Involved in Brachioplasty?

Brachioplasty is the medical term for arm lift surgery. It’s performed to remove the saggy skin that hangs below the upper arm, commonly called “batwings.” The condition can be caused by hormonal changes or genetics, but it most commonly follows significant weight loss.

The loss of skin elasticity is what allows it to hang loosely, and using exercise to attempt to tighten up the skin typically has little to no effect.

Brachioplasty, on the other hand, will make a definite difference. Arm lift surgery is done to remove the excess skin and any pockets of fat in the area, while also tightening up the supportive tissue that helps shape and smooth your upper arm.

How Much Does Brachioplasty Cost?

Cost of brachioplasty surgery may vary due to several contributing variables which may affect the final cost.

Dr. Contogiannis will discuss your case during the initial consultation and be able to give you an accurate cost assessment at that time. Many cosmetic surgeries are not covered by insurance, so it’s best to contact your provider to find out which procedures they will or will not provide coverage for.

At The Renaissance Center for Plastic Surgery & Wellness, we strive to keep our procedures affordable for all of our clients. We’re happy to be able to offer financing as an option for your brachioplasty surgery through Alphaeon® or CareCredit®.

How Does Brachioplasty Work?

Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure, and as such, must be performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision, usually on the underside of the upper arm, so the scar is less noticeable. Excess skin and fat is removed during the operation, which can last up to about three hours, depending on how much removal of skin, tissue, and fat is necessary. Liposuction may be incorporated to help reduce excess fat, as needed.

“Got my arms lifted recently. Dr. C is very hands on with her patients. Her staff is great. Love Liz. I will go back to her for my tummy tuck. Thank you Dr. C and staff.”

What Are the Benefits of Brachioplasty?

For those who have dealt with saggy skin, for those people who have stopped wearing tank tops and sleeveless shirts… for those individuals, the benefits of brachioplasty are priceless, and they’re typically thrilled with their results. Some of the most common benefits are:

  • Droopy, saggy skin is removed
  • Self-confidence is boosted and self-image is improved
  • Scarring is minimal and hidden as much as possible
  • Upper arm contour is improved
  • Sleeveless clothing options become a choice again

For more comprehensive body contouring results, brachioplasty is often combined with a tummy tuck and/or thigh lift.

Am I a Good Candidate for Brachioplasty?

If you are bothered with saggy, droopy skin hanging below your upper arm, and are otherwise a healthy individual, chances are you’ll be a good candidate for brachioplasty and will benefit greatly.

What Can I Expect During Recovery Following Brachioplasty?

For most patients, it takes several weeks for full healing to take place following arm lift surgery. The arm may be wrapped to keep swelling to a minimum. Any bruising or swelling will resolve naturally and gradually over the next three to four weeks.

You will likely be cautioned to stay home and rest for about two weeks. This usually means the doctor doesn’t want you to drive, go to work, or do most of your normal activities during that time.

Dr. Contogiannis will give you post-op instructions specific for your unique recovery. For optimal recovery results, read and follow them as closely as possible.
